New therapy may offer protection to severe peanut allergy sufferers

What:
The study, Effect of Anti-IgE Therapy in Patients with Severe Peanut Allergy, will be presented in a live press conference during the 60th Anniversary Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). The meeting, entitled "Allergy, Asthma and Immunology: 60 Years of Progress" will take place March 7-12 in Denver.

When:
Monday, March 10, noon, Eastern Time.

Who:
Donald Y. M. Leung, MD, FAAAAI, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Denver
Hugh A. Sampson, MD, FAAAAI, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine
Anne Munoz-Furlong, Founder/CEO, The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network

Where:
Adams Mark Hotel, Plaza Court 1
1550 Court Place
Denver, Colorado

Why:
Severe peanut allergy affects nearly 1.5 million people and is responsible for 50-100 deaths per year in the United States. Anaphylactic reactions to peanut can occur at any age and the only current treatment is peanut avoidance or rescue from epinephrine. However, only a small number of people carry epinephrine and even timely injection may not prevent death. The study's findings presented in the press conference may offer protection from most unintended ingestions.
