Space center director to speak at robotics competition at UCF

NASA-Kennedy Space Center Director Roy Bridges will discuss the shuttle program and the importance of robotics competition at the University of Central Florida

ORLANDO, March 12, 2003 - NASA Kennedy Space Center Director Roy Bridges will discuss the Columbia disaster, the shuttle program and the importance of robotics competition March 21 at the FIRST Central Florida Regional Robotics Competition at the University of Central Florida.

Bridges will speak at noon at an invitation-only luncheon. A question-and-answer session will follow his comments. The media is invited.

More than 40 high schools from Florida and North America will field teams in the high-spirited, fast-paced and highly competitive regional competition March 20-22 at the UCF Arena.

FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, inspires the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians through its robotics competitions, says Wayne Weinberg, the Central Florida regional competition's vice chair and director of development at the UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science.

NASA-KSC and the UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science are co-hosting the Regional.
