AACR reschedules annual meeting for July 11-14 in Washington, D.C.

The decision to reschedule the meeting came after a large majority of registrants, abstract presenters and invited speakers -- surveyed over the past week by the Association -- said they would like to move forward as soon as possible with the Annual Meeting.

"I am personally delighted that members of the cancer research community consider this event so important to their work and the battle against this disease that they have asked us to reschedule this year rather than waiting for next year's Annual Meeting," said Margaret Foti, Ph.D., chief executive officer of the AACR.

The program will remain virtually in tact, depending on commitments from scientific participants and sponsors.

Further information regarding the program, registration and refund policies, hotel and travel information, and other details will be announced on the AACR website at www.aacr.org and in e-mail announcements over the coming weeks.

"The choice to cancel our meeting in Toronto was a painful one for this organization, taken after many participants decided they could not attend because of the SARS outbreak there," said Dr. Foti.

"We are grateful to all those who understood the difficult position presented to us when we were forced to cancel," she added.

Founded in 1907, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is a professional society of more than 20,000 laboratory and clinical scientists engaged in cancer research in the United States and more than 60 other countries. AACR's mission is to accelerate the prevention and cure of cancer through research, education, communication and advocacy. Its principal activities include the publication of five major peer-reviewed scientific journals (Cancer Research; Clinical Cancer Research; Molecular Cancer Therapeutics; Molecular Cancer Research; and Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention). AACR's annual meeting attracts more than 12,000 participants who share new and significant discoveries in the cancer field, and the AACR's specialty meetings throughout the year focus on all the important areas of basic, translational and clinical cancer research.
