WHY: High blood pressure affects 50 million Americans. It is the chief risk factor for stroke and heart failure and a major risk factor for heart disease and kidney disease.
The guidelines, which will be published in a major scientific journal, represent the first significant update from the NHLBI's National High Blood Pressure Education Program (NHBPEP) since 1997. JNC 7 will present redefined and streamlined blood pressure categories as well as recommendations on prevention, diagnosis, and drug and lifestyle treatment approaches. The guidelines also include new data on control, awareness, and treatment rates for high blood pressure.
