Laboratory to unveil new licensed technology

Ambassador Linton Brooks, administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, will attend the unveiling of the Laboratory's RadScout, a lightweight handheld portable system that not only detects radioactive material, but then analyzes and identifies the source in real time.

RadScout was developed within the Lab's nuclear weapons division for emergency first responders and inspection personnel who need rapid detection and identification of material to determine the nature and scope of a threat.

Director Michael Anastasio will host a special demonstration of the technology. Representatives from ORTEC, a division of AMETEK Advanced Measurement Technology, which is licensing the technology, as well as emergency responders from Alameda County, the U.S. Customs, the Coast Guard, and the U.S. Post Office are also scheduled to attend.
