Dow Corning president to speak to women chemists in New York

NEW YORK — Stephanie A. Burns, Ph.D., president and chief operating officer, Dow Corning Corp., will be the keynote speaker at the Women's Chemist Committee Luncheon on Sept. 9 at the American Chemical Society's 226th national meeting in New York. Her address is entitled, "Fashioning a Sustainable Future: Our Roles as Women Chemists."

Burns will explore a variety of perspectives for women, including: balancing career and family commitments to the advantage of both; making decisions for personal short and long-term gain; and weighing the value and cost of the options along the way. "Success isn't just about 'getting to the top' or making a lot of money. Success comes from enjoying where you are at every stage and making the best investments for your overall well-being," Burns says. She believes that women chemists have a vital role to play in the future of chemistry. "We need to sustain the gains we've achieved as professionals in this field."

Burns, who was elected president and COO in February 2003, holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Iowa State University. She is responsible for spearheading the transformation of Dow Corning from a product-focused company to a customer-centered company dedicated to offering a range of products, services and solutions. Burns, who served as Director of Women's Health for Dow Corning, is an advocate of research based on sound scientific principles as the essential element of public discussion on health issues.
