National Academies advisory: May 22 meeting on OMB Risk Assessment Bulletin

The National Academies' National Research Council has been asked to review the Risk Assessment Bulletin recently released by the White House Office of Management and Budget. According to OMB, the bulletin is a guide intended to enhance the technical quality and objectivity of risk assessments that are used by federal agencies in regulatory decision-making. A Research Council committee will evaluate the scientific and technical merit of the proposed guidance, identify elements possibly missing from the guidance, and determine whether OMB appropriately incorporated recommendations from previous Research Council reports.

At its first meeting, the committee will hear presentations by officials from OMB and other federal agencies and by experts from universities, corporations, think tanks, and environmental organizations. The speakers include JOHN GRAHAM, dean of the RAND graduate school, who as former administrator of OMB's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs spearheaded the development of the proposed bulletin.
