Did you know that osteoporosis can be detected using ordinary dental x-rays? …that there’s a new way to cure canker sores? ...that scientists are getting closer to creating tissues to augment or replace injured, defective, or diseased body parts?
These are but a few of the thousands of pieces of information which will be presented when the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) holds its 85th General Session & Exhibition, March 21-24, 2007, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. It will also be the 36th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research and the 31st Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.
This year, nearly 3,000 scientific presentations will be made, divided among plenary/oral/poster sessions and symposia/workshops. (For releases on selected topics, please see the white section of this Press Kit.) Estimates are that over 4,500 dental scientists, educators, students, and practicing dentists from around the world will convene, representing the latest thinking in dental research.
In addition to the individual presentations, there will be Distinguished Speaker lectures, symposia, and workshops during the four-day meeting, dealing with special-interest symposium topics ranging from gender effects on temporomandibular disorders, to frail older adults with dementia and failing dentition, to the impact of Hurricane Katrina on oral medicine and pathology in New Orleans. (For a complete listing, please see the green section of this Press Kit.)
Featured during Meeting Week will be the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition (45 competitors from 22 countries) for student investigators. The presentations, in poster format, will be judged by top-level scientists. Winners will receive cash prizes and plaques.
The Opening Ceremonies and Welcome Reception, from 4:15 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 21, will provide an exciting kick-off for the week's activities. Many awards and fellowships, including the 2007 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards (goldenrod section), will be presented. Refreshments at the Welcome Reception, to be held in historic Generations Hall, are generously sponsored by Crest Oral-B P&G Professional Oral Health. (For more information on awards, please see the green section of this Press Kit.)
The Distinguished Lecture Series will feature presentations by two prominent individuals:
For the second consecutive year, there will be three sessions of "Late-breaking News", featuring "hot" scientific breakthroughs (Thursday, March 22, 9 am, oral session, Room 287; Thursday, March 22, 3:30 pm, poster session, Exhibit Hall I2-J; and Friday, March 23, 9 am, oral session, Room 285).
Lawrence Tabak, Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, will make a special "State-of-the-Institute" presentation on Friday, March 23, at 8:00 am, in Auditorium A of the Convention Center.
One of the unique opportunities offered to students is Lunch & Learning, where students may sign up to discuss, over an informal luncheon, topics of interest with senior researchers. This year, Lunch & Learning will be held on one day only—Thursday, March 22. Twenty-eight senior scientists from a wide variety of dental disciplines are volunteering their services for this event.
Returning for the fifth consecutive year are Keynote Speakers, who will be presenting "state-of-the-science" addresses in all of the Scientific Groups. (For details, please see the green section of this Press Kit.) Returning to the IADR meeting is a Job Opportunity Bulletin Service (JOBS), available to all registrants, located in the IADR Registration Area. Bulletin boards will be available to job recruiters to post job vacancies. There will also be a New Member Orientation Reception (Wednesday, March 21, 1:30-2:00 p.m.), where new members can find out about becoming more involved in the IADR and its specialty Groups and Committees. This reception is generously supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Co.
For the 27th consecutive year, commercial exhibits will be featured at the Meeting. Meeting participants are encouraged to visit the booths of the following:
