World conference on research integrity -- fostering responsible research

The issue of research integrity has emerged in recent years as a critical topic in policy research. The issue has been fiercely debated as it has an enormous impact on how the public, policy makers perceive the creditability of the research community.

The European Science Foundation (ESF) and the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity (ORI) will organise a Research Integrity conference in Lisbon, Portugal on 16 to 19 September 2007 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In an attempt to further world dialogue on this topic, the World Conference will focus attention on systemic and institutional issues, including organizational, governance and legal issues.

Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Research, Professor José-Mariano Gago, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Portugal, along with more than 50 researchers, research administrators, research sponsors, journal editors, representatives from professional societies and policymakers are scheduled to attend the event. The World Conference on Research Integrity is the first global forum to provide an opportunity to discuss strategies for harmonizing research misconduct policies and fostering responsible conduct in research.
