Final of EPSRC's 2007 Knowledge Transfer Challenge Awards

Transforming knowledge into economic benefits

The five finalists in EPSRC’s Knowledge Transfer Challenge Awards all have a strong track record in turning their research into benefits for UK society.

This competition is also about coming up with new ideas for promoting future knowledge transfer activity to help ensure that research is transformed into products and services that everyone can benefit from.

The five finalists and their track record in Knowledge Transfer:

The awards are being hosted by Ian Pearson, Minister of State for Science and Innovation, Professor David Delpy, Chief Executive of EPSRC and John Armitt, EPSRC Chair.

Ian Pearson, Science and Innovation Minister said:

"To ensure that society reaps the benefits of scientific research, innovation has to be transformed into tomorrow’s products and services.

“EPSRC’s Knowledge Transfer Challenge provides an ideal opportunity for researchers to demonstrate the wider benefits of some of the great work that is carried out in British Universities. The power of knowledge, ideas and innovation is key to the nation’s economic health. It is crucial for us to transform knowledge into successful products and new jobs – if we are to compete in a rapidly changing world.

“The Awards provide one route to support this process, helping universities to turn their cutting-edge research into social and economic gains for everyone.”

The winning university will receive a £500,000 award and a £60,000 CASE studentship*. The four runners-up will receive awards of £100,000. Last year’s winning idea was from the University of Manchester, which came up with software that led to major advances in getting different computer systems to talk to each other.
