Your Brain on Cubs: Inside the Heads of Players and Fans

(Washington, D.C.) - The Dana Alliance of Brain Initiatives and the Dana Press present a discussion about the brain’s role in sports fandom and athletic expertise. The event will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2008, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Dana Center, 900 15th Street, N.W. Washington, D.C. The event is to celebrate the publication of Your Brain on Cubs: Inside the Heads of Players and Fans, edited by Dan Gordon.

Featured panelists:

Bobby Thomson – Hitter of the most famous home run in baseball history. Thomson’s dramatic “shot heard’ round the world” capped the Giants’ historic comeback to with the National League pennant in 1951.
Jordan Grafman, Ph.D. - Senior investigator at the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke. A lifelong Cubs fan, and contributor to Chapter 1, “The Depths of Loyalty: Exploring the Brain of a Die-hard Fan.”
Hillary R. Rodman, Ph.D. – Associate Professor of Psychology at Emory University where she teaches a course called, “Science and Myth of Baseball.” Dr. Rodman is contributor to chapter 7, “It Isn’t Whether You Win or Lose, It’s Whether You Win.”

In Your Brain on Cubs (Dana Press/April 2008) science writers and neuroscientists explore America’s national pastime and other sports and deliver an intriguing examination of the ways the brain functions in fans and athletes. These experts address fascinating topics such as developing talent, enhancements, loyalty, and, the agony and ecstasy of winning.
