Press conference on latest polar research

Leading polar scientists from 63 countries will gather in St Petersburg, Russia, from 8 to 11 July to discuss the future of the polar regions and their impact on the rest of the world.

Scientists at the conference 'Polar Research – Arctic and Antarctic Perspectives in the International Polar Year (IPY)' will present the latest research coming out of the IPY, including: the current status of the environment and ecosystem; how it is changing, has changed and is likely to change; how these changes are linked to the rest of the globe; and the impacts on people.

The conference comes at a time when the IPY sponsors, the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), emphasize the urgent need to understand the polar regions and their critical influence on the rest of planet.

International Polar Year 2007-08 (IPY)

The IPY is an intensive burst of internationally coordinated, interdisciplinary, scientific research and observations focused on the polar regions. Thousands of scientists from around the world are involved in more than 200 research projects that aim to discover more about the polar regions and their critical influence on the rest of the planet.
