Chemical Society Presidential Symposia in Philadelphia focus on energy crisis, health, education

An in-depth look at the deepening worldwide energy crisis, chemistry's role in better health and the need for stronger science education are all issues highlighted in special Presidential Symposia scheduled for the American Chemical Society's (ACS) 236th National Meeting in Philadelphia, Aug. 17-21.

ACS President Bruce E. Bursten, Ph.D., who also is Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will chair the sessions.

The energy symposium, to be held Monday, Aug. 18, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Philadelphia Marriott, Grand Ballroom, Salon F, will examine potential solutions to global energy challenges as well as the problems and their causes.

Other Presidential sessions include:

Presidential Symposia focusing on the centennials of four ACS divisions — Agriculture and Food Chemistry, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry –– will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Marriott, Grand Ballroom, Salon F.

A series of speakers celebrating of the 40th anniversary of Project SEED, a program that encourages economically disadvantaged students to consider careers in chemistry. The session will be held Monday, Aug. 18, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Philadelphia Marriott, Grand Ballroom, Salon E.

The Astellas Foundation Award Lectures will be held Sunday, Aug. 17, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Philadelphia Marriott, Grand Ballroom, Salon E. Among those speaking is Esther S. Takeuchi, Ph.D., who invented the first generation of long-lived batteries that safeguard the lives of thousands of people in implantable heart devices. She will describe the uses of implantable power systems in pacemakers, neurostimulators, and implantable cardiac defibrillator.
