The Acting Surgeon General will announce a Call to Action on Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.
Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism affect an estimated 350,000 to 600,000 Americans each year. Together, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism contribute to at least 100,000 deaths annually.
At the event, Acting Surgeon General Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H., Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D., Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and others will outline how to increase awareness of these potentially fatal medical conditions and recommend action steps for individuals, families, the health care system, policymakers, and governments to reduce the numbers of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism cases nationwide.
