Congressional Briefing on Civic Engagement

You are invited to attend a congressional breakfast briefing on the subject of civic engagement on Tuesday, November 25, 2008. This event will serve as the closing session of the 61st Annual Scientific Meeting of The Gerontological Society of America (GSA).

President-Elect Barack Obama has voiced support for an expanded federal commitment to volunteer service, so civic engagement advocates are preparing to work quickly with congressional leaders to enact service legislation early in the 111th Congress. The speakers include policy makers, civic engagement experts, corporate leaders, advocates, and volunteers who will share their visions for a more perfect environment for service.

Representatives from the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and Senator Orrin Hatch's (R-UT) office and others will discuss proposed national service bills, including the Serve America Act (S. 3487) and the Encore Service Act (S. 3480). Also participating will be former U.S. Senator Harris Wofford, AARP COO Tom Nelson, and IBM VP of Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs Stanley Litow.
