York conference will explore the future of software

The University of York is the venue for a major international research conference that will help to plot the roadmap for the future development of computer software.

More than 600 delegates from Europe, North America and Asia will be attending the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS), the primary European forum for academic, industrial researchers and companies working on Software Sciences

Hosted by the University of York's Department of Computer Science and starting on 22 March, ETAPS 2009 will be spread over nine days and feature five main conferences running in parallel, with satellite workshops and other events.

The five conferences are:

• International Conference on Compiler Construction
• European Symposium on Programming
• Fundamental Approaches to Software Engineering
• Foundations of Software Science and Computation Structures
• Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems

The invited speakers are Rajeev Alur (UPenn, USA), Jean-Marc Eber (Paris, France), Stephen Gilmore (Edinburgh, UK), Steven Miller (Rockwell-Collins, USA), John Reynolds (Carnegie-Mellon, USA), Vivek Sarkar (Rice, USA), Wolfgang Thomas (RWTH Aachen, Germany).

Delegates will also take part in a number of social events including a Reception attended by the Lord Mayor of York at the Castle Museum on 23 March, and a gala dinner, at the National Railway Museum on 25 March.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, Professor Brian Cantor, who will open the event, said: "It is a great honour both for the University and the city to host ETAPS 2009. It is a highly influential international forum and its presence at York underscores the consistent excellence and visionary thinking of our Department of Computer Science."
