Federal agencies collect and analyze statistics on many aspects of American life, including where people live, whether they're employed, and what diseases they suffer from. These numbers inform policymakers' decisions and contribute to scientific advances in areas such as economics, health care, and immigration -- making it crucial that agencies collect accurate and complete data.
The National Research Council will co-sponsor a symposium to explore why the federal system for collecting statistics matters and how to improve it. Confirmed speakers include PETER ORSZAG, director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and JOHN HOLDREN, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. An agenda is available at http://www7.nationalacademies.org/cnstat/may_2009_agenda.pdf
The symposium will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 8, in the auditorium of the National Academy of Sciences building, 2100 C St., N.W., Washington, D.C. Reporters who wish to attend should register in advance with the Office of News and Public Information, tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu.
