Woods Hole lecture series explores range of scientific topics

WASHINGTON – The National Academies announced today this summer's lineup of lectures called Distinctive Voices@The Jonsson Center. The public events in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, feature diverse subjects for those curious about science, technology, and medicine. This year, the program will explore science and technology's role in diplomacy, space exploration, climate change, globalization, aging, and creativity. Award-winning scientists and engineers -- many of whom are members of the Academies -- will speak about recent findings and research developments.

To give attendees the chance to engage in stimulating conversations sparked by the presentations, a reception follows each event. The events are free and open to the public. For more details, visit www.voicesatjonsson.org. A list of the summer events follows.

Thursday, Aug. 6, 7 p.m. -- Challenges and Opportunities of an Aging Society, by John W. Rowe, M.D. (IOM), Columbia University, New York City

Tuesday, Aug. 11, 7 p.m. -- Creativity: Unlocking Hidden Potential, by Richard Foster, Ph.D., Millbrook Management Group, New York

The Distinctive Voices lecture series began in 2006 with Distinctive Voices@The Beckman Center, held at the National Academies' conference center in Irvine, California. It was expanded to the Academies' Woods Hole facility to make the program available to residents and visitors of Cape Cod from May to October.
