KENNEWICK, Wash. -- More than 250 chemists, physicists and geologists are expected to gather for a week of presentations on the migration of radioactive chemicals through earth and aquifers below ground. The 12th international migration conference will be held in a city close to one of the pioneer locations of nuclear technology, the Hanford Site .
Migration '09 will focus on recent developments in the fundamental chemistry of the radioactive elements known as actinides, fission and activation products in natural aquifer systems, their interactions and migration in the geosphere, and the processes involved in modelling their geochemical behavior. In honor of the meeting's proximity to the Hanford Site, the conference will hold a special technical session on subsurface contamination issues specific to Hanford.
The sessions in Migration '09 cover the following areas:
A - Aquatic chemistry of actinides and fission products
B - Migration behaviour of radionuclides
C - Geochemical and transport modelling
