Ecosystem researchers to hold science briefing for policymakers

Scientists to share insights about urban ecosystems and their vulnerability to climate change

Washington, DC – On Thursday, September 24, 2009, six leading ecosystem researchers will share with lawmakers key findings on the impacts of climate change on urban ecosystems. This science briefing is part of the annual Association of Ecosystem Research Centers annual meeting in Washington, DC.

Cities around the nation are bracing for the impacts of climate change. From sea level rise in coastal states to drought in the west, water will be at the forefront of policy decisions in the coming century. Understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change on urban infrastructure requires decision makers to utilize new planning tools and to consider human systems in the larger context of the natural environment. To do this, current and accurate scientific information is required.

Join the following internationally recognized scientists for a discussion of the impacts of climate change on urban infrastructure and water resources, as well as how ecosystems may be able to help us adapt to our rapidly changing environment.

This briefing (9:30 – 10:30 am) will be held in conjunction with the 2009 AERC annual symposium, which begins at 12:30 pm in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
