American Chemical Society webinar focuses on NSF's small business funding programs

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2010 — News media and others interested in the chemical sciences are invited to join the next in a series of American Chemical Society (ACS) Webinars™, focusing on how to navigate the National Science Foundation's (NSF) small business funding programs.

Scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, from 2 – 3 p.m. EDT, the free ACS Webinar™ will feature Josephine Yuen, Ph.D., NSF Program Director, speaking on Demystifying SBIR/STTR Grant Applications and Processes for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses.

ACS Webinars™ connect you with subject experts and global thought leaders in chemical sciences, management and business to address current topics of interest to scientific and engineering professionals. Each webinar includes a short presentation followed by a Q & A session.

News media and scientists can tune into the conference without charge, but must register in advance.

Participants will learn:

• Who is eligible to participate in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs
• When small businesses should come to the NSF for financial help in R&D
• What is the approach of NSF's SBIR/STTR program in support of innovation
• What types of support are available from NSF for small business innovation
• What research topics NSF supports

Yuen joined NSF as a program director in April 2009 after serving as a commercial reviewer for NSF's SBIR/STTR program. She held executive positions in three small businesses after more than two decades at AT&T and then its spinoff, Lucent Technologies. Yuen was the adjunct faculty at Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship of Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she taught MBA courses in Entrepreneurship, and developed and taught a course in Innovation Management for the executive MBA program. Yuen holds a Ph.D. and a M.S. in physical chemistry from Cornell University and a B.S. in chemistry from Wayne State University.
