In this symposium, a panel of experts will provide short commentary on key issues of gerontology and geriatrics education, including competency-based education, the relevancy bridge between gerontology education and practice, leveraging impact through partnerships and evaluation, and a look at accreditation as a quality assurance mechanism. Members of the audience will then be invited to share their viewpoints, success stories, concerns, and recommendations for AGHE and its membership.

Past President's Symposium: Saturday, March 2, 1:30 p.m.
Six past presidents of AGHE will make short statements regarding ways to move forward in making gerontology education a more visible and accepted component of higher education. These statements will provide the basis for the discussion of strategies to create a wave of change in educational institutions and in society at large to embrace increased knowledge and awareness of aging and the aged as a central component of a complete education.

The AGHE K-12 Committee is sponsoring a writing contest for middle school students in the St. Petersburg. The theme of the writing contest is "Bridging the Generations: An Important Older Person in My Life." Finalists and their guests will be recognized at this special event.
"Global Aging: The Pan American Health Organization's (PAHO) Educational Efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean"
Closing Plenary Session: Sunday, March 3, 11 a.m.
PAHO is leading the efforts of a 17-country Latin American and Caribbean educational consortia that has developed and implemented both a two-year master's in Public Health and Aging in Spanish and an eight-month Public Health and Aging Specialization for health ministries in both Spanish and English. The comprehensive curriculum is competency-based and addresses the management of multiple chronic conditions, common diseases, health system delivery, health policy and healthy aging. This massive work force preparation effort speaks to the growth and diversity of the region's population and the levels of economic development, socio-political systems and languages and ethnic variation and backgrounds. One half of the session will be devoted to a panel that will present the background and overview of the program, while the remaining half will be a facilitated discussion around key questions and issues.
