Partho P. Sengupta, MBBS, MD, DM, FASE, Director of Cardiac Ultrasound Research and Associate Professor of Medicine in Cardiology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, conducted the first-ever presentation using hologram technology at The American Society of Echocardiography's (ASE) 2013 24th Annual Scientific Sessions on July 1 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

During his state-of-the art invited talk to 1,000 experts in the field of echocardiography as the ASE's 14th Annual 2013 Feigenbaum Lecturer, Dr. Sengupta beamed on stage with him holograms of projected 3-dimensional digital images, animation, and expert interview recordings to illustrate the latest technology and future applications of functional echocardiography to more precisely analyze the structure, function and flow patterns of the cardiovascular system.

The prestigious selection of Dr. Sengupta as the ASE's Feigenbaum Lecturer recognizes his significant contributions to research in the field of echocardiography and his potential to continue at a high level of achievement. The innovative holographic presentation was made possible through the unique, collaborative efforts of engineering and animation experts from around the world including from the United States, India, Europe, and Canada.

"I thank the ASE for awarding me this incredible honor as the 2013 Feigenbaum Lecturer," says Dr. Sengupta of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. "This new holographic presentation format is a true testimony to Mount Sinai and ASE's commitment to innovation. It also highlights the strong vision of former ASE President Dr. Harvey Feigenbaum, the father of echocardiography."

"Partho, you did a fantastic job," stated Harvey Feigenbaum, MD, FASE, after the special lecture named in his honor who is the Founder and first President of the ASE. "There's no way you can top this. We just got a glimpse of the future."

"We are so very proud at Mount Sinai of Dr. Sengupta's first-of-its-kind, innovative holographic presentation," says Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director of Mount Sinai Heart, Physician-in-Chief, Director of the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute, and the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Center for Cardiovascular Health at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. "Dr. Sengupta is a true leader in the field of cardiac imaging and is advancing the detection of cardiovascular disease in patients at its earliest stages —when it matters the most for successful prevention and intervention."

"Dr. Partho Sengupta, a gifted investigator and lecturer who has made novel discoveries about myocardial mechanics, truly exemplifies the spirit of this award," says Patricia A. Pellikka, MD, FACC, FAHA, FASE, past President of ASE and Director of Echocardiography Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic. "His holographic presentation at ASE was absolutely spectacular! He presented an insightful and futuristic lecture about the massive amounts of data available with echocardiography and how this information should be managed and harnessed to improve patient care."

"Dr. Sengupta's presentation was nothing short of remarkable," says Neil J. Weissman, MD, FASE, 2014-15 President-Elect for ASE who serves as President of MedStar Health Research Institute and Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. "It will go down in the history of the ASE Scientific Sessions for both its powerful message and impactful presentation media."

"The talk was transformative and a wake-up call," Susan Wiegers, MD, FACC, FASE, Vice President for ASE and Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professor of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine. "Dr. Sengupta's vision is compelling and laid out the road map for the way forward. The explosion of knowledge and data available through cardiac ultrasound, is not just a change in how much we know and can understand about the heart, but a fundamental change in how we know about each patient's heart. In the world of big data and interconnectedness, we are facing a major shift in the paradigms of knowledge."

As the largest global organization for cardiovascular ultrasound imaging, ASE is the leader and advocate, setting practice standards and guidelines. Comprised of over 16,000 physicians, sonographers, nurses and scientists, ASE is a strong voice, providing guidance, expertise and education to its members with a commitment to improving the practice of ultrasound and imaging of the heart and cardiovascular system for better patient outcomes.

Dr. Sengupta, who also serves as Director of the Echocardiography Research Core Lab at Mount Sinai, has over 100 peer-reviewed publications that have focused on the analysis of structure, function, and flow patterns in the cardiovascular system. The primary goal of his research is to detect early stages of cardiovascular disease using state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound technologies.

Dr. Sengupta graduated as a cardiology fellow from All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and then completed his clinical residency and cardiology fellowship from Mayo Clinic Rochester and Arizona respectively. Prior to his move to Mount Sinai New York, he served as the Director of Noninvasive Cardiology and Cardiac Imaging at University of California, Irvine. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of American College of Cardiology: Imaging and has been elected to serves as a Board of Director for the American Society of Echocardiography and as the Chair of the 2013 ASE World Summit on Echocardiography. He has won several excellence awards including ASE's Young Investigator Award in 2004, Mayo Clinic Research Award in 2007, Mayo Brother's Distinguished Fellowship Award in 2009 and AACIO Young Investigator Award in 2010.

About The Mount Sinai Medical Center

The Mount Sinai Medical Center encompasses both The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Established in 1968, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is one of the leading medical schools in the United States. The Icahn School of Medicine is noted for innovation in education, biomedical research, clinical care delivery, and local and global community service. It has more than 3,400 faculty members in 32 departments and 14 research institutes, and ranks among the top 20 medical schools both in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding and by U.S. News & World Report. The Mount Sinai Hospital, founded in 1852, is a 1,171-bed tertiary- and quaternary-care teaching facility and one of the nation's oldest, largest and most-respected voluntary hospitals. In 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital 14th on its elite Honor Roll of the nation's top hospitals based on reputation, safety, and other patient-care factors. Mount Sinai is one of just 12 integrated academic medical centers whose medical school ranks among the top 20 in NIH funding and by U.S. News & World Report and whose hospital is on the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll. Nearly 60,000 people were treated at Mount Sinai as inpatients last year, and approximately 560,000 outpatient visits took place.
