New York -- Katepalli R. Sreenivasan, president of Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) and dean of NYU engineering, has been elected to Accademia dei Lincei,, the Rome-based scientific academy announced.

A distinguished experimental physicist whose research focuses on the behavior of fluids and turbulence, Sreenivasan was one of 20 new members selected by the institution, whose early members included Galileo Galilei.

Sreenivasan, a recipient of Humboldt and Guggenheim fellowships, was previously elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering, among other academic institutions. He is a University Professor at NYU, with appointments in the Department of Physics and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

Sreenivasan joined NYU in 2009 from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, where he was director, and was concurrently on the faculty of the University of Maryland. Prior to those posts, Sreenivasan was on the faculty at Yale University for more than two decades, with appointments in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, and Mathematics.

Established in 1603, Accademia dei Lincei was the first academy of sciences established in what is now Italy.
