New Rochelle, NY, December 2, 2013--The Genetics Policy Institute (GPI) will bestow its 2013 Education Award on Mary Ann Liebert, President and CEO of the company that bears her name, citing her work in educating patients, researchers, and the broader stem cell community, and in raising the standard in medical research journalism.
Ms. Liebert is the president and CEO of Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., a media empire known for establishing authoritative peer-reviewed journals in promising areas of science and biomedical research. Its biotechnology trade magazine, Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN), debuted in 1980, was the first in its field, and is today the industry's most widely read publication worldwide. Stem Cells and Development is an authoritative peer-reviewed journal dedicated to developments in the biology, characteristics, and therapeutic utility of stem cells. Many journals she publishes intersect the field of regenerative medicine, contributing to the scholarship and advancing stem cell science. Ms. Liebert is also the founder and executive vice president of the Rosalind Franklin Society, which recognizes and advances important contributions made by women in the life sciences.
"Stem cells hold enormous promise in so many areas of medicine and surgery," said Ms. Liebert. "This most important Summit exemplifies the urgent need for a broad global coalition to advance its research and application – the researchers, regulators, investors, clinicians, and members of the public and private sectors. Patients and the public at large need to understand the promise of stem cell research and clinical usage, and urge support for ongoing and new initiatives. I salute the Genetics Policy Institute for bringing these constituents together, and I am honored to receive this prestigious award."
Since 2005, GPI has honored the stem cell community's top innovators, leaders, and champions at its Stem Cell Action Awards Dinner during the annual World Stem Cell Summit. This year's awards will be presented on Dec. 5 at the Ninth Annual Stem Cell Action Awards dinner, during the 2013 World Stem Cell Summit at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego.
