(Dec. 10) —The widely used no-calorie sweetener, aspartame, has been deemed safe for consumption at current levels by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which conducted one of the most comprehensive risk assessments ever undertaken. EFSA's opinion echoes those of numerous government agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration. EFSA also concluded that:
Low and no-calorie sweeteners, including aspartame, have also been reviewed by The American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association and the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which have found them to be safe and effective.
