Denver, CO (March 21, 2014) – Research presented by P&G Beauty scientists at the 72nd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) offers insights into new ingredient formulations and effective skin care routines. P&G Beauty will showcase several studies that address a range of topics including cellular bioenergetics, anti-aging technologies, microdermabrasion systems and sensitive skin body wash efficacy.

"P&G Beauty is proud to share our research at this year's AAD meeting, and is looking forward to collaborating with experts in the field of dermatology," said Scott Rodrigue, director of research & development for P&G Beauty. "P&G is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge and innovative scientific research to skin care, with the ultimate goal of developing new products and technologies that will touch and improve the lives of our consumers."

The following summaries represent a small sampling of the breakthroughs P&G Beauty will highlight at this year's AAD Annual Meeting:

Comparison of the Efficacy of a Cosmetic Exfoliation System with Professional Microdermabrasion (Poster #8138)

In this randomized, double-blinded, split-face study, researchers compared the Pro-X Olay Microdermabrasion (MDA) system with a professional MDA treatment in 41 female subjects between the ages of 35 and 65. Participants treated one side of their face twice a week with the Pro-X Olay MDA system at home. The opposite side of the face was treated with a professional MDA regimen at a dermatologist's office.

At days 7 and 14 post-treatment, skin hydration and barrier function were measured; facial images were taken for physician's assessment of visual changes. Self-evaluations were also given via questionnaires. Results indicated that the Pro-X Olay MDA system exfoliated as effectively as a professional MDA treatment after seven days of use. Additionally, consumers noted their appreciation of the flexibility and convenience of using the treatment at home.

Impact of Advanced Petrolatum-Depositing Body Wash on Stratum Corneum Barrier Function and a Healthy Skin Appearance – Skin Biomarker Measures (Poster #8697)

P&G Beauty scientists evaluated the impact of an advanced petrolatum-depositing body wash on skin appearance using the Standard Leg Controlled-Application Test (LCAT) methodology. Women with dry leg skin washed their legs once daily with randomly assigned body wash products over a three week period during the winter season. Common skin measures were taken, including expert dryness grading and assessment of hydration and barrier function (via corneometer and TEWL).

Results found that the advanced petrolatum-depositing body wash delivered significant improvements in comparison to an alternative technology containing a glycinate surfactant and soybean oil emollient.

Improvement in Facial Skin Appearance by a Cosmetic Treatment Regimen with Skin Energizing Technology: A Full Face Clinical Study (Poster #8248)

The objective of this study was to demonstrate improvements in skin appearance after the use of a three-product cosmetic anti-aging skin care regimen containing broad-spectrum sunscreen, niacinamide, olive oil derivative, pal-KTTKS and dill extract. In a six-week randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled, full-face study, the authors measured UV exposure time in 150 Chinese females ranging from 20 to 60 years old. Subjects were separated based on age and pre-study UV exposure time (low, medium, and high).

Participants in the control group were non-sunscreen users and used a cleanser only. Individuals in the treated group used the three product cosmetic anti-aging skin care regimen. Measurements were taken at weeks three and six. Full face images were captured, followed by assessment of TEWL and hydration on the cheek and upper inner arm.

Women in the treated group demonstrated significantly improved skin hydration after three and six weeks. The product regimen also dramatically reduced spot and melanin area fraction and increased skin color evenness after three and six weeks.

Improved Appearance of Facial Wrinkles in Post-Menopausal Women with Use of a Cosmetic Moisturizer Containing Artichoke Extract (Poster #8012)

Signs of facial skin aging in women worldwide include fine lines and wrinkles. To address the unique physiological skin care needs of women older than 48 years of age, P&G Beauty scientists evaluated a daily-use facial moisturizer formulation containing artichoke extract, which has previously shown to positively affect skin health and structure biomarkers in in vitro skin models. This double-blinded, vehicle-controlled, 12-week study consisted of women 55-56 or 40-48 years old with moderate to more severe facial fine lines and wrinkles. Subjects applied moisturizer twice daily, and skin appearance was examined at zero, four, eight and 12 weeks by digital imaging and expert grading of redness and dryness.

The use of a cosmetic moisturizer formulation containing artichoke extract significantly improved the appearance of eye area fine lines and wrinkles as compared to vehicle across all age ranges tested. The improvement was apparent in the 55+ women at the eight week time point evaluated by expert grading, and increased in magnitude for the duration of product use (12 weeks). The 55-56 age group demonstrated a faster rate of improvement as compared to the 40-48 year-old participants, indicating that daily use of the cosmetic moisturizer formulation containing artichoke can reverse the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in women of different ages and at different speeds.
