ROIS (Research Organization of Information and Systems) based in Tokyo signed MoUs on Data Centric Science research collaboration with European organizations, CSC - IT Center for Science, Finland, DSI (Data Science Institute, Imperial College London, UK) and EUDAT (European e-Infrastructure Project). The MoUs were signed on February 25 and 26 in Tokyo, and are expected to form the basis of further collaboration between the parties.

ROIS is umbrella organization of the four national institutes in Japan (the National Institute of Polar Research, the National Institute of Informatics, the Institute of Statistical Mathematics and the National Institute of Genetics), and two centers (the Transdisciplinary Research Integration Center and the Database Center for Life Science). ROIS is promoting data centric science (the scientific approach that utilizes big data, also known as "the fourth paradigm").

CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd. is a non-profit, state-owned company administered by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. CSC maintains and develops the state-owned centralized IT infrastructure and uses it to provide nationwide IT services for research, libraries, archives, museums and culture as well as information, education and research management.

Data Science Institute at Imperial College London aims to enhance Imperial's excellence in data-driven research across its faculties by fulfilling the following objectives. To act as a focal point for coordinating data science research at Imperial College by facilitating access to funding, engaging with global partners, and stimulating cross-disciplinary collaboration.

EUDAT, the pan-European Data Infrastructure, is a network of collaborating, cooperating centers, combining the richness of numerous community specific data repositories with the permanence and persistence of some of Europe's largest scientific data centers. EUDAT offers common data services, supporting over 30 research communities as well as individuals, through a geographically distributed, resilient network of 33 European organizations.

ROIS, CSC, DSI and EUDAT held an international workshop on data centric science in Tokyo on February 24. Many lively presentations and discussions were made on the trend and future direction, and the management issues of the institutions that promote data centric science. The speakers and panelists included lab directors and domain/methodology researchers from the institutes. The MoUs were signed after the workshop. All the parties agreed to expand their international collaboration in order to further promote data centric science research.
