(Boston)--Denise M. Sloan, PhD, professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), is the recipient of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) Distinguished Mentorship Award. She was chosen by the ISTSS Student Section.
Sloan, who is also associate director, Behavioral Science Division, VA National Center for PTSD at the VA Boston Healthcare System, was presented with this award in recognition of her commitment and dedication to helping her students grow and meet their goals.
Sloan is an accomplished researcher in psychosocial interventions for traumatic stress disorders. She is conducting three studies investigating the effectiveness of different treatment approaches for PTSD. In addition to her research, Sloan is an expert on emotional processes in traumatic stress disorders and integration of methods to assess and treat emotional disturbances related to traumatic stress. She is an associate editor for Behavior Therapy and a consulting editor for six scientific journals.
"Dr. Sloan is a superb mentor for clinical psychologists at all levels of training," said Terence Keane, PhD, professor of psychiatry at BUSM and associate chief of staff, research and development at the VA Boston Healthcare System. "The ability to manage successfully one's supervisors, one's colleagues and one's supervisees is rare among professional people, yet Dr. Sloan does this masterfully. This award is truly a great acknowledgment of her work and dedication," he added.
The Distinguished Mentor Award honors and promotes the efforts and accomplishments of an individual who consistently serves as an effective mentor for students in the field of traumatic stress. The award recognizes one who effectively guides students throughout their professional training in a continuing, multi-faceted partnership sustained by mutual respect and concern.
