Amsterdam, Dec. 1, 2015 - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical, and medical information products and services, today announced the launch of the American Journal of Ophthalmology Case Reports, a new open access journal publishing case reports in all subspecialties within ophthalmology. This peer-reviewed, online-only companion journal to the prestigious American Journal of Ophthalmology (AJO) is now accepting submissions and will begin the publication of articles in 2016.

"Our vision for AJO Case Reports is to serve as a dedicated forum for clinician scientists around the world to share relevant, timely information on the diagnosis and management of the most challenging cases that they encounter in their daily practice, as well as provide insightful clinical pearls," commented Editor-in-Chief Quan Dong Nguyen, MD, MSc, McGaw Endowed Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and Inaugural Director of the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha.

Dr. Nguyen, together with Managing Editor Anna Boyum, PhD, and an eminent international editorial board, envision that the case reports, case series, and brief reports published in the journal will serve as inspiration for future studies, trials, and investigations that may lead to definitive recommendations and improved patient outcomes.

This new journal welcomes the submission of original case reports directed to ophthalmologists and visual science specialists that are clear, concise and well documented. Cases should be challenging and stimulating. They should also be presented in an educational format to engage the readers as if they are working alongside with the caring clinician scientists to manage the patients. Brief reports and case series submissions on specific themes are also encouraged.

Authors publishing in AJO Case Reports will benefit from a rapid review process. The journal will follow the Article Based Publishing scheme, allowing papers to appear fully citable online shortly after acceptance. In addition readers will have immediate and permanent free access to their work on http://www.ajocasereports.com and ScienceDirect.

"Case reports are often the earliest publication of a new finding that can generate additional interest in an area of study and they are highly valued because of their practical and didactic nature," explained Elsevier Publisher Jason Winkler. "We are confident that AJO Case Reports will achieve the high-quality standards readers have come to expect from the AJO. With its launch, our intention is to better serve the authors and readers within the ophthalmology community and provide a resource to support the delivery of optimal patient care."
