The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and Senior Service America, Inc., have named Tetyana P. Shippee, PhD, of the University of Minnesota as the 2015 recipient of the Senior Service America Senior Scholar Award for Research Related to Disadvantaged Older Adults.
This honor acknowledges presentations at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting that represent exemplary basic or applied research related to the capabilities, contributions, challenges and concerns of disadvantaged older adults, especially those who are low-income and minority group members.
The award presentation took place at GSA's 68th Annual Scientific Meeting, which was held from November 18 to 22 in Orlando, Florida. This conference is organized to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, educators, and practitioners who specialize in the study of the aging process. Shippee is an assistant professor in the Division of Health Policy and Management within the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on two main topics: long-term care and aging, and racial disparities in health and health care. Key concepts in Shippee's work include cumulative inequality theory and patient-centered measures, including quality of life and social engagement. As part of her work on quality of life in long-term care settings, she lived in a Continuing Care Retirement Community for two years, using intensive qualitative methods to study transitions between levels of care and resident adjustment.
Shippee is a GSA fellow, which represents the Society's highest class of membership.
