The Oceanography Society (TOS) congratulates Professor Arnold L. Gordon (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University) on being selected as a Fellow of The Oceanography Society. The citation on Professor Gordon's certificate recognizes him for his fundamental contributions to our understanding of how the global ocean is interconnected, drawing from his observations of the Southern Ocean, Indonesian Seas, and Agulhas retroflection.
Dr. Gordon will be formally recognized on Feb. 23, 2016 during a ceremony at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.
A letter of support for Dr. Gordon's nomination written by Dr. Stephen Rintoul notes that "Arnold Gordon was the first to make a serious effort to observe many of the oceanic phenomena we now consider to be of greatest importance in the global general circulation. Gordon had the vision and physical intuition to recognise the importance of these current pathways long before others did and to design field programs to tackle them. But he also had the tenacity, leadership, and diplomatic skills to make these innovative experiments succeed despite immense challenges."
Dr. Gordon is currently a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. He received an Sc.D from the University of Cape Town, a B.A from Herbert Lehman College, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
