The International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) is pleased to announce the names of the recipients of HFSP international postdoctoral fellowships for 2016 following a rigorous selection process in a global competition. A total of 697 applications were received in this round from applicants originating from over 50 different countries.
HFSPO awards a total of 75 postdoctoral fellowships of which 69 are Long-Term Fellowships for life scientists planning to extend their expertise into another field of biology and 6 are Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships that will support young scientists with a non-life science PhD degree such as chemistry or physics. The latter are particularly special as they link the life sciences with neighboring disciplines thus pushing the use of quantitative approaches in modern biology.
For HFSPO Secretary General Warwick Anderson "research in biology in this second decade of the 21st century is astonishingly diverse, and increasingly using physics, mathematics and chemistry to tackle the really important questions. Modern microscopy and imaging tools are just one example of the essential ties between biology and the physical sciences. Therefore the HFSP Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships represent an important element in shaping the science of the future."
HFSP fellowships enjoy an excellent reputation and offer a built-in return component. Starting in their second year of tenure, HFSP fellows can draw up plans for setting up their own independent laboratory. Fellows can then use the remaining time of their tenure to move to the new location. A fellowship is worth about 180,000 USD spread over three years and includes support for research costs and child care.
