(Goodyear, Arizona - April 12, 2016) -Dr. Glen Weiss, Director of Clinical Research and Medical Oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center (Western) has been named 2016 Healthcare Leadership Awards' Researcher of the Year by AZ Business Magazine.

"Healthcare Leadership Award winners and finalists represent all facets of healthcare in Arizona, from those who impact the communities they serve, legal advocates, medical companies that are changing the way the industry operates and facilities that are raising the level of care in Arizona to new levels of excellence," said AZ Big Media Publisher Cheryl Green. "They are all doing extraordinary work."

Other Researcher of the Year finalists included Eric Reiman, MD, CEO, Banner Research and Keith Stewart, MB, Mayo Clinic of Scottsdale. This is the third consecutive year Dr. Weiss has been named a finalist and the first year he has been recognized as Researcher of the Year.

"It is an honor to be considered a finalist alongside Dr. Reiman and Dr. Stewart -- both immensely talented physicians," said Dr. Weiss. "It's also an incredible honor to do what we do each and every day through clinical research, which is never stop searching for the most innovative treatment options that will help heal the patients we serve."

At Western, Dr. Weiss supervises more than 20 clinical trials involving hundreds of patients. He not only provides patient care in the clinic, but he is also intricately involved in cutting-edge biomedical laboratory research and discoveries.

"This recognition is possible because of the many patients who trust us with their care each and every day, as well as the strong support of our clinical colleagues, administrators and our incredible research team," Dr. Weiss added.

Under the leadership of Dr. Glen Weiss, Western has launched numerous clinical trials, including those that evaluate the impact of the combination of chemotherapy with immunotherapy, which is intended to activate the body's own immune system to fight cancer. Since Western's clinical research program's inception in 2012, patient enrollment in trials has increased by more than 800 percent. In 2015, Western exceeded the national average of approximately four percent for adult patients participating in research studies by approximately 300 percent, with dozens of patients now participating in treatment trials. Research results from some of these trials have been recently presented at various international meetings, including the World Conference on Lung Cancer and the AACR-NCI-EORTC International Conference on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics.
