Interview Opportunities: Dr. Vaughan Turekian and Dr. Andrew Sugden



Dr. Vaughan Turekian, Ph.D. is chief international officer for AAAS. He has expertise in the areas of avian influenza and climate-change science.

MUNICH, GERMANY -- Dr. Vaughan Turekian, Ph.D., chief international officer for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general science society and publisher of the journal Science, will be available for media interviews during Euroscience Open Forum 2006.

Dr. Turekian -- who also serves as Director of the AAAS Office of International Initiatives, and Director of the Center on Science, Technology and Sustainable Development -- has expertise in the areas of avian influenza and climate-change science, and he is prepared to discuss a broad range of issues on behalf of AAAS, from sustainable development and the misuse of science, to U.S. visa restrictions.


Dr. Dr. Andrew Sugden, Ph.D. is the managing editor for Science International in Cambridge, U.K. He is available to discuss Science's international presence, as well as general journal policies and issues.

Dr. Andrew Sugden, Ph.D., managing editor for Science International in Cambridge, U.K., also will participate in the Euroscience 2006 event in Germany and is available to discuss Science's international presence, as well as general journal policies and issues. Dr. Sugden received a degree in Botany from the Oxford University in 1975, and he earned his doctoral degree in 1980, also from Oxford, in tropical rain forest ecology. His research emphasized tropical rain forest ecology. His subsequent publishing career has included positions as founding editor of the international monthly review journal, Trends in Ecology & Evolution (1986-1999). He also served as co-editor of the history of science quarterly, Endeavour (1996-1999), founding editor of Trends in Plant Sciences and managing editor at Elsevier Trends Journals. Since that time, he has served as senior editor responsible for ecology and evolution for Science International.

Dr. Turekian helps coordinate the broad range of AAAS's international activities to help advance science and improve human well-being. Prior to this position, he served as Special Assistant to the U.S. Undersecretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, advising on a broad range of international science, technology, environment and health issues, including clean energy, sustainable development, climate change, scientific outreach and avian influenza. Before joining the State Department, he worked on the Committee on Global Change Research and the Board on Atmospheric Sciences at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). In 2001, he served as the NAS Study Director for the White House-requested report on climate-change science. Dr. Turekian received his master's and doctorate degrees in environmental sciences from the University of Virginia, where he focused on applying stable isotopic tracers to characterize aerosol sources and chemistry in the marine boundary layer. He is a graduate of Yale College, with degrees in Geology and Geophysics and International Studies.
