Welcome Breakfast for Reporters: AAAS President Susan Hockfield

Thursday, 15 February 7:45 AM — 8:30 AM

This breakfast will be hosted by AAAS President Susan Hockfield. It will be held in Room 9 in the Austin Convention Center. For registered reporters only.


University of Texas at Austin Reception

Thursday, 15 February 4:00 PM — 5:30 PM

Newsroom registrants are invited to this social event, sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin, to be held on Level 3 of the Austin Convention Center. Newsroom badge is required.


International Reporters Reception

Thursday, 15 February 8:00 PM — 10:00 PM

AAAS welcomes reporters with a special reception at Cedar Door (located two blocks from the Austin Convention Center), sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. Guests must wear their newsroom badges.

For newsroom registrants arriving after 5:00 PM on Thursday, 15 February who would like to attend the International Reporters Reception, please notify Amanda Johnson at abjohnson@aaas.org no later than 3:00 PM on Thursday, 15 February. You may pick up your badge at Cedar Door after 7:30 PM. Your press kit will be available for pick up on Friday at the Newsroom Headquarters (Austin Convention Center, Level 3, Room 7).

The Kavli Foundation — Luncheon Media Roundtable

Friday, 16 February 12:00 PM — 1:00 PM

Working reporters are cordially invited to a luncheon in Room 9 in the Austin Convention Center, hosted by The Kavli Foundation, to include a special media roundtable where winners of the 2017 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards will talk about their prize-winning reporting and the state of science journalism. Seating is limited to 100 guests.


The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters Reception

Friday, 16 February 4:00 PM — 5:30 PM

Scholarships for science journalists will be announced at this reception presented by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Mohammed Yahia, president of the World Federation of Science Journalists, will announce the winners, who will be offered an opportunity to attend the Kavli Prize events in Norway in September. This wine and cheese event will take place on Level 3 of the Austin Convention Center. Open to Newsroom registrants only. Wear your badge.


AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards Reception and Ceremony

Friday, 16 February 7:00 PM — 10:00 PM

The gala reception and award ceremony to honor the 2017 winners of the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards (now open to journalists worldwide) will also feature entertainment by singer Emily Gimble, a "best keyboards" winner at the Austin Music Awards. Newsroom registrants are invited to join the celebration at the Hilton Austin Hotel, Austin Grand Ballroom. Newsroom badge is required.


Press Breakfast: Canada's Approach to Developing Quantum Technologies

Saturday, 17 February 7:45 AM — 9:00 AM

Newsroom registrants are invited to a press breakfast in Room 9 in the Austin Convention Center, sponsored by Canada's University of Waterloo, featuring three scientific directors from the University of Waterloo, the University of British Columbia and the Université de Sherbrooke, for insights into Canada's program for developing quantum technologies.


EurekAlert! PIO Seminar

Saturday, 17 February 3:00 PM — 4:30 PM

The 2018 EurekAlert! PIO Seminar, "You're Earning Coverage, But Are You Earning Trust?" will be held in Room 9 in the Austin Convention Center. Registration is required for this optional paid event. Those not attending the Annual Meeting may participate via live webcast. Register online now.


AAAS International Reception Presented by the UK Research and Innovation

Saturday, 17 February 6:30 PM — 8:00 PM

Join AAAS and the United Kingdom's Research Councils for a special reception celebrating global science diplomacy in the Governor's Ballroom at the Hilton Austin. This is an opportunity for U.S. and international attendees to meet and mingle in an informal setting, and to further strengthen the spirit of collaboration and friendship at the heart of modern science. European Commission's Joint Research Centre Unveils the World Atlas of Desertification

Sunday, 18 February 12:00 PM — 1:00 PM

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre will present a world atlas of extreme land degradation on Level 3 of the Austin Convention Center. The new World Atlas of Desertification, coordinated by the Joint Research Centre, reveals the dynamic footprint of humans on Earth and the ramifications on land resources. Tacos will be served. EurekAlert! Reception
