Researchers will investigate the adoption of technologies at scale that remove CO2 from the atmosphere. These include management of peatlands for carbon accumulation, rock dust spreading on fields, tree planting, carbon sequestration using biochar, and bioenergy grasses and willow crops. Work on the 4.5-year projects will begin this month in multiple trial locations, coordinated by a central Hub.
A new research project aims to improve sustainability in the preservation of food products. The project focuses on using natural biological preservation methods rather than chemical preservatives in order to eliminate the food waste problem. The project will develop a proof-of-concept for a bio-preservative system that can significantly enhance food safety and reduce food waste. The project is headed by Aarhus University, Denmark, and is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
The Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands receives 3.8 million euro from the Dutch Research Council for the GLOBALISE project to provide digital access to the UNESCO archive of the VOC, enabling a better understanding of colonial history, the Dutch East India Company and the early-modern histories of countries and cultures of the Indian Ocean and Indonesian Archipelago Worlds.
The Gula Tech Foundation has awarded UTSA's Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS) a $250,000 grant to raise public awareness about cybersecurity. The foundation distributed $1 million in grants across seven winners, with the CIAS being recognized as its first-place recipient.
