Monensin crystal structure (IMAGE)
Caption
Scientists have found the crystal structure and unlocked the mechanism of activity of a family of enzymes that produce monensin, widely used as a cattle antibiotic. Supercomputer simulations helped reveal the sequence of reactions of the enzyme. Knowing the structure and reaction mechanisms of monensin enzymes opens the door for future design of related antibiotics.
