Scammon's Illustrations of West Coast Killer Whale Species (IMAGE)
Caption
Illustrations from Charles Melville Scammon's 1874 book, "The Marine Mammals of the Northwestern Coast of North America Together With an Account of the American Whale Fishery." They are the first scientific illustrations of killer whales on the West Coast of North America, but also reflect the incomplete knowledge of the two species over time. While Scammon was right that there are multiple species of killer whales, he sometimes thought differences between males and females were differences between species.
