Appalachia After Hurricane Helene: Series Trailer (VIDEO)
Caption
In this video series, Dr. Andrew Joyner, Tennessee State Climatologist and East Tennessee State University professor, explores the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene in the Appalachian Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. As one of the most extreme flooding events in recent memory, responders have called it the worst they've ever seen, and this series dives into why Helene was so destructive in the Appalachian Mountains. In this video series trailer, Dr. Joyner describes how rainfall in the headwaters of the Nolichucky River led to flash flooding, causing water levels to skyrocket. With advanced tools like drone technology, ETSU’s Department of Geosciences was able to gather crucial data on flood extents and assist local emergency agencies, like TEMA, in real-time. The series also compares Helene to past storms, examines flood mitigation strategies, and highlights the resilience of the affected communities.
