If the enzyme p97/VCP works properly, the cell is able to break down accumulations of misfolded proteins. They can be seen in the left image as white dots inside the cell. After blocking the enzyme, protein clumps accumulate - seen on the right at the edge of the blue nucleus as magenta structures - which are suspected of triggering various diseases
