The images display colour-coded signals from the ATP sensor expressed by the mice’s nerve cells. The sequence (from top left to bottom right) shows the drop in ATP levels during a spreading depolarization triggered by oxygen (O2) and glucose deprivation (OGD). Cooler colours indicate lower ATP levels in the nerve cells. Arrows (top right panel) indicate the direction in which the wave spreads.
