Figure | Differences between resonances in dielectric and plasmonic metasurfaces for sensing a. Spectra of resonance peaks reflectance. Dielectric platforms typically provide higher resonance amplitude and quality factors (sharp, strong signals) while plasmonic platforms provide lower amplitudes and broader peaks but higher sensitivity to refractive index changes on the surface. b. The differences shown in a) are mirrored in published experimental results in recent years. Plasmonic systems show the highest sensitivity with low amplitudes, while dielectric systems show generally higher quality factors and higher amplitude values with lower sensitivity. Dielectric platforms can also be optimized to reach very high-quality factors at the expense of high amplitudes.
