Neutrophils (IMAGE)

A research team from three Johns Hopkins institutions has shown that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can “reprogram” pathogen-fighting white blood cells known as neutrophils (left side) into immune system suppressing cells known as PMN-MDSCs (right side) — perhaps providing a mechanism by which severe COVID, a more dangerous form of the disease, may arise.
