The battle between Plasmodium falciparum and natural killer (NK) cells
Plasmodium falciparum uses RIFIN proteins to bind to the inhibitory receptor KIR2DL1 on natural killer (NK) cells, thereby evading their attack. Conversely, NK cells can recognize RIFIN via the activating receptor KIR2DS1, triggering cytotoxicity against infected red blood cells.
