Memory formation is like pearls on a string (IMAGE)
Caption
May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser use beads on a string to explain how our sense of time works. The string represents our subjective experience of time, which usually drifts smoothly forward. But when something important happens, the signal jumps. Edvard demonstrates this by lifting the string upwards, and May-Britt attaches a paperclip at that spot. The paperclip marks the start of a new experience - a kind of bookmark in the brain.
