New Insights into Rheumatoid Arthritis Inflammation (IMAGE)
Caption
The IGFL2 gene encodes a cytokine found in primates, which are closely related to humans. In the joint tissue of people with rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral helper T (Tph) cells express IGFL2, which increases the expression of CXCL13, a protein that promotes autoantibody production. Additionally, IGFL2 activates immune cells called monocytes and macrophages, further amplifying inflammation and worsening joint damage.
