A team led by Jennifer Nelson found that principals in the Los Angeles Unified School District had disparate views of the districtwide screening process that vets applicants for teaching positions. Even those who viewed the system as beneficial often used their own strategies, such as word of mouth, to recruit applicants for teaching positions in their schools, said Nelson, a professor of education policy, organization and leadership.
