Newly Recognized Pathway Could Protect Diabetics from Hypoglycemia (VIDEO)
Caption
New research shows that delta cells in the pancreatic islet are stimulated in unison with beta cells producing insulin, creating a feedback loop that prevents a sudden drop in blood sugar. In this video of a mouse pancreatic islet, beta cells (red) and delta cells pulse in unison as the beta cells release pulses of insulin. Green shows rising levels of intracellular calcium. Sound traces the response of beta cells (low pitch) and delta cells (high pitch).
