An electron microscope image of the superfluid wave tank (IMAGE)
Caption
Electron microscope image of the superfluid wave tank used in the experiments (blue) coupled to an optical fibre which brings laser light in and out of the device. The zoom-in shows the photonic crystal resonator which traps and magnifies the laser light to enable wave generation. The entire device length is 100 microns, approximately the width of a human hair. The microscopic wave tank is coated with 5 femtoliters of superfluid helium (a volume 10 billion times smaller than a rain drop).
